Security tips and advice.
Here are some commonsense ideas to improve your overall home security.
Neighbours- You and your neighbours can keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour and generally out of the ordinary happenings on your street. Enquire at your local police station about neighbourhood support groups. These groups are very successfull and popular with many existing all over NZ.
One thing I learned at our neighbourhood support meeting was that it is ok to dial 111 if you are suspicious about anything. The police are happy to check it out if they are not stretched with other matters. They would rather catch the offenders in the act for the best possible outcome.
If you go away have your neighbour clear your mail. Leave a key and code to your alarm with a neighbour or relative incase of any activations. Leave all your contact details with them.
Leave a pair of shoes by the front door if you are away to give the impression of been home.
Have a light on a timer to come on at night.
Securely lock all windows and doors.
Dont leave sought after items in view through windows such as jewellery, money, ipods etc.
If you have a security alarm system, turn it on. Put warning labels on your windows to advertise the fact you have a security system.

Alarm monitoring.
Having your alarm monitored by a reputable physically secure monitoring company is the best way to ensure your property is protected. After 27 years installing alarms locally around Tauranga I have had experience with many monitoring firms. My company of choice is Nutech Security. Their staff and standards are of high quality and they offer great value for money. They have the largest number of patrols on the roads locally. They have a fully protected monitoring station in a commercial building unlike others who operate out of their homes. They can instantly despatch a security guard if your alarm is activated and notify keyholders.
With the move to people not having a traditional telephone line or connecting their phones over the new fibre network, other options for connecting their alarm systems have been introduced. These include units which connect over the GSM network like a cellphone and can text you of any activations or are connected to a 24 hour monitoring station.
Description of equipment:
-
PIR detectors: PIR detectors detect a sudden change in temperature and cover for 15 meters at 90 degrees within a room. They can be set to Pet Friendly mode to reduce activation from cats and dogs to 25 kgs.

-
Keypads: All have built in panic buttons and take multiple user codes. Use the LCD model for a higher quality look or the night arming module in the master bedroom for simplicity.

Will sound sirens for pre programmed time typically 2 – 5 minutes and then resets staying armed. Fully programmable via the keypad for each installations requirements.

Smoke detectors: Can be connected to the alarm to sound sirens and phone out to monitored numbers.

-
Glass break detectors: Detect the frequencies of shattering glass. Ideal in shop situations to stop smash and grab before entry is gained.
-

-
Remote control: To arm/disarm the alarm and open the garage door from your car. Can be programmed to act as a portable panic button.
-

Door contacts: Fitted to doors. Ideal for roller doors or guncupboards etc.

Services
Existing Alarm servicing -
If you have an existing security system that requires maintenance then give us a call. It is important where possible to note the brand of alarm and who may have installed it ( check window stickers ).
The main cause of faults that we see with older alarms is failure of the backup battery. These batteries ( normally sealed lead acid type ) need to be replaced about every 2-5 years. If left connected once they have expired they can overload the charging circuitry in the alarm causing further damage.

5 Years is a good period to have the alarm fully serviced to ensure proper operation.
Pre wiring of new buildings-

The best time to run wiring for a security system is during the building process. Most houses can be wired for under $300 and it should be considered even if the alarm is not to be fitted immediately once the building is complete.
Existing buildings can be wired through ceiling space cavities etc but it is more difficult. Wireless alarms are an option but it is preferable to run wiring where possible to eliminate the need for battery replacement on wireless devices.
Security system fitting-
This can be done once a new building is painted and power is on. For existing buildings an alarm can usually be wired and fitted within a day.

Alarm types-
Audible only alarms will sound an external and internal sirens for a few minutes before resetting. The idea is to flush out any intruders and alert people nearby.

Monitored alarms will phone out to a Security company or direct to someones own phone to alert them of the activation.
Security monitoring to companies such as NUTECH SECURITY is well worthwhile if your premise to be protected is a business or a home not permanently used or for anybody wanting the peace of mind that somebody is coming to check out their alarm activation.

About us
Bay Security Systems was started in 1994 by Andrew Straker. Andrew had been working in the security industry for 10 years with his previous employer in Tauranga. He was then ready to go out on his own and soon built up a huge client base during the housing boom years in Tauranga, Papamoa, Mount Maunganui, and Te puke in the 1990s.
Bay Security Systems still looks after all those existing alarm systems as well as fitting new systems. People are very relieved to have the same company who installed the system still able to service it over 20 years later.
Bay Security Systems is a fully licensed security company ensuring a security background check has been done. Always check anybody working on or discussing your security, has this license as shown below.
